چکیده

We present VLT/NACO SDI images of the very nearby star SCR 1845-6357 (hereafter SCR 1845). SCR 1845 is a recently discovered (Hambly et al. 2004) M8.5 star just 3.5 pc from the sun (Deacon et al. 2005). Using the capabilities of the unique SDI device, we discovered a substellar companion to SCR 1845 at a separation of 4 AU (1.170”±0.003” on the sky, PA=170.20◦±0.13◦) and a ∆F1(1.575 μm) of 3.57±0.057 mag. This substellar companion has an H magnitude of 13.3 −0.21, and an absolute H magnitude of 15.5 −0.20. The unique Simultaneous Differential Imager (SDI) consists of 3 narrowband filters placed around the 1.6 μm methane absorption feature characteristic of T-dwarfs (Teff < 1200 K). The flux of the substellar companion drops by a factor of 2.7±0.1 between the SDI F1(1.575 μm) filter and the SDI F3(1.625 μm) filter, consistent with strong methane absorption in a substellar companion. We estimate a spectral type of T6±1 for the companion based on the strength of the break. The chances that this object is a background T dwarf are vanishing small – and there is no isolated background Tdwarf anywhere near these coordinates in the field according to 2MASS. Thus, it is a bound companion, hereafter SCR 1845-6357B. For an age range of 100 Myr 10 Gyr and spectral type range of T5-T7, we find a mass range of 8.5 60 MJup for SCR 1845B from the Baraffe et al. (2003) COND models. This is likely the closest brown dwarf to the Sun (in the 16th closest stellar system to the sun.) Subject headings: instrumentation: adaptive optics — binaries: brown dwarfs

Discovery of a Very Nearby Brown Dwarf to the Sun: a Methane Rich Brown Dwarf Companion to the Low Mass Star Scr

We present VLT/NACO SDI images of the very nearby star SCR 1845-6357 (hereafter SCR 1845). SCR 1845 is a recently discovered (Hambly et al. 2004) M8.5 star just 3.85 pc from the Sun (Henry et al. 2006). Using the capabilities of the unique SDI device, we discovered a substellar companion to SCR 1845 at a separation of 4.5 AU (1.170”±0.003” on the sky) and fainter by 3.57±0.057 mag in the 1.575 ...

How Dry Is the Brown Dwarf Desert?: Quantifying the Relative Number of Planets, Brown Dwarfs and Stellar Companions around Nearby Sun-like Stars

Sun-like stars have stellar, brown dwarf and planetary companions. To help constrain their formation and migration scenarios, we analyse the close companions (orbital period < 5 years) of nearby Sun-like stars. By using the same sample to extract the relative numbers of stellar, brown dwarf and planetary companions, we verify the existence of a very dry brown dwarf desert and describe it quanti...

Evidence for Accretion in a Nearby, Young Brown Dwarf

We report on the discovery of the young, nearby, brown dwarf 2MASS J0041353−562112. The object has a spectral type of M7.5, it shows Li absorption and signatures of accretion, which implies that it still has a disk and suggests an age below 10Myr. The space motion vector and position on the sky indicate that the brown dwarf is probably a member of the ∼20Myr old Tuc-Hor association, or that it ...

Astronomy and Astrophysics Discovery of a Faint Field Methane Brown Dwarf from Es0 Ntt and Vlt Observations

We report the discovery of an isolated brown dwarf with similar properties to the binary object Gliese 229B and to the newly discovered field brown dwarf SDSS 1624+00. Although exhibiting similar colors, its magnitude of ∼ 20.5 is about 6 and 5 magnitudes fainter than Gliese 229B and SDSS 1624+00 respectively. This is the third methane brown dwarf reported to date, the second isolated one in th...

Characterization of the Nearby L/t Binary Brown Dwarf Wisej104915.57−531906.1 at 2 Parsecs from the Sun

WISE J104915.57−531906.1 is a L/T brown dwarf binary located 2 pc from the Sun. The pair contains the closest known brown dwarfs and is the third closest known system, stellar or sub-stellar. We report comprehensive follow-up observations of this newly uncovered system. We have determined the spectral types of both components (L8±1, for the primary, agreeing with the discovery paper; T1.5±2 for...
